Dia de los Muertos

October 31st, 2017

What is it?

Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is one of the biggest and most monumental holidays in Mexico. For 3 days, family and friends get together to honor loved ones that have passed away.

It originated as an Aztec harvest holiday.  They believed that honoring the dead, would ensure an abundant harvest the following year.

Main traditions

Build altars

Build an altar to celebrate those who passed away. Decorate the altar with  pictures, flowers and candles

Kids make sugar treats shaped like skulls, while some shop for them at the market
